Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera known as "El Chapo", born in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, is a Mexican mobster who runs the Cartel de Sinaloa, an organization specializing in international drug trafficking. He is nicknamed "El Chapo" because of his height of 168 cm.

Following the arrest of his rival Osiel Cárdenas Guillén in 2003, he became the world's leading drug trafficker and is considered the "most dangerous trafficker in the world" by the United States.

Every year between 2009 and 2011, he was ranked by the American magazine Forbes as one of the most influential and powerful people in the world, ranked respectively, and he was the second most powerful man in Mexico behind Carlos Slim. He was named the richest in Mexico and the 1140 in the World, with an estimated fortune of 1 billion dollars.

The Sinaloa Cartel transports several tons of cocaine by container from Colombia through Mexico to the United States, the world's largest consumer. The cartel also controls the manufacture and distribution of other drugs, exported to the United States and Europe.

Joaquin Guzmán was first captured in Guatemala in 1993 and then extradited to Mexico where he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking. After corrupting guards, he escaped from a maximum-security federal prison in 2001. Wanted by Mexico, the United States and INTERPOL, a total of $8.8 million was available in information exchanges leading to his capture. He was arrested by the Mexican authorities. He escaped again through a 1.5 km tunnel dug for the occasion. He was finally captured a third time by Mexican special forces.
