Robert De Niro grew up in Little Italy, New York. He left school at the age of sixteen to attend drama classes at the Luther James Studio Dramatic Workshop and the Stella Adler Theatre School. He also studied with Lee Strasberg at the Actors' Studio, where he met Harvey Keitel, whom he met several times throughout his career. He first appeared on stage in Anton Chekhov's L'Ours, and made his discreet film debut in 1965, as in Marcel Carné's film Trois chambres à Manhattan, a year later, Robert De Niro met Brian De Palma with whom he directed three semi-improvised comedies: The Wedding Party (1966), Greetings (1968) and Hi, Mom !
