Rap is a form of vocal expression on a musical background that belongs to the hip-hop cultural movement that emerged in the mid-1970s in the ghettos of the United States. Hip-hop appeared in the Bronx. Rap usually consists of ginning rhymed verses separated by choruses, accompanied by rhythms (beat, scratching, sampling). Having been influenced by other musical genres (reggae, blues, jazz, etc.), rap became increasingly popular in the 1980s.

In the early days, MC's, (master of ceremony or microphone controller) were just used to support DJs, and rapped parts were simply called MC-ing (emceeing).

The word rap is composed of three letters R A P which refer to rhythm and poetry. But the word rap also comes from the English verb to rap, which means to talk, chat, chat. The word rap would also be the acronym for rage against the police.
